Rim Students Win Awards

The Inland Empire Chapter of the California Association of Regional Occupational Centers and Programs (CAROCP) held its annual Outstanding Student Recognition Competition May 13 in San Bernardino.

Ninety students from 16 school districts in San Bernardino County participated in the first round of the competition on February 28. Rim High nominated sixteen students, and six of them continued to the regional finals on May 13. Four divisions participated including San Bernardino Superintendent of Schools ROP, Colton-Redlands-Yucaipa ROP, Baldy View ROP and the Riverside County Office of Education ROP.

The students spent a great deal of time preparing for the competition, which consisted of resume writing, application forms, an extensive interview and the presentation of a detailed career and work portfolio. The multimedia students who competed also included a video and photo portfolio. Students attend workshops in the Rim High Career Center, where they learn interviewing and portfolio presentation techniques, as well as business ethics. The skills they learn for interviewing will carry them through their chosen career paths and into a successful future.

Barbara Harding, the ROP Coordinator for Rim High stated, "In all my years of attending these ceremonies, I have never seen one high school do as well as Rim High did in this competition."

The winning students by category are: Christy Cohen, first place for graphic arts and electronic prepress; Cody Snow, first place for fire technology; Rachel Mills, first place for careers in education; John Katsoulas, second place for computer network management; Alyssa Spooner, second place for TV/video production; Garret van de Water, honorable mention for TV/video production.

Rim High would like to thank Joseph Urbaszewski, Kathy Horton, Dale Meyer, Marsha Halquist, Greg Ward, Barbara Harding and Rose Urbaszewski for their support through this competition, and the technical education their courses continually provide to the students.
